The Art of Candle Care: Tips to Burn Beautifully

"A well-loved candle is one that's been properly cared for — from the very first burn."

At Divine Wick, every candle we hand-pour in our London studio is crafted to bring warmth, calm, and elegance into your space. But even the most beautifully made candle needs a little care to truly shine. Whether you've just received your first Divine Wick candle or you're a seasoned enthusiast, these candle care tips will help you get the very best from every burn.

The UK's love affair with luxury candles has never been stronger. From cosy autumn evenings to spring wellness rituals, we light candles to mark moments, transform moods, and turn an ordinary room into a sanctuary. But so many candle lovers — without realising it — are shortening the life of their candles with simple, avoidable habits.

This guide covers everything you need to know about candle care in the UK, from that all-important first burn to storing your candles through the changing British seasons.

The Essential Candle Care Tips

These six practices make the difference between a candle that tunnels, smokes, and fades quickly — and one that burns evenly, fragrantly, and beautifully right to the last hour.

Always Trim Your Wick

Before every single burn, trim your wick to around 5mm (roughly ¼ inch). A long wick causes excessive flame, black soot, and uneven burning. Use dedicated wick trimmers or small scissors — and always trim before lighting, never after.

Nail the First Burn

The first time you light your candle is the most important. Allow it to burn until the entire surface has melted into a full wax pool — reaching the edges of the vessel. This prevents tunnelling and sets the memory of the wax correctly for all future burns.

Burn for 2–4 Hours at a Time

Never burn a candle for more than four hours continuously. Beyond this, the wick can become unstable and the wax overheats, compromising both fragrance throw and safety. For Divine Wick candles, two to three hours is the sweet spot.

Use a Candle Snuffer

Blowing out a candle disturbs the wax surface and can cause smoke and wax splatter. A candle snuffer extinguishes the flame cleanly, keeps the wick centred, and preserves the integrity of your candle. It's a small luxury that makes a real difference.

Keep It Away From Draughts

In the UK, draughty rooms are common — especially in older homes. A draught causes uneven burning, tunnelling, and excessive soot on the glass. Always place your candle in a draught-free spot, away from open windows and fans.

Recenter the Wick After Burning

After each burn, while the wax is still warm and soft, gently push the wick back to the centre if it has shifted. A centred wick ensures an even, clean burn every time and extends the life of your candle significantly.

"The first burn sets everything in motion. Give it the time and space to melt fully to the edges — this single habit will transform how your candle performs for its entire life."— The Divine Wick Team, London.

Understanding Candle Tunnelling — and How to Avoid It

Tunnelling is one of the most common candle problems in UK households, and it happens when a candle burns straight down the middle, leaving a ring of unmelted wax around the edges. Over time, the flame sinks so deep that it can no longer receive enough oxygen to stay lit — and you're left with a beautiful-looking candle that simply won't burn.

The good news? Tunnelling is almost entirely preventable. The key is that crucial first burn. Natural wax candles — like those made with pure soy wax or coconut-soy blends — have what's called a "wax memory." They will naturally want to follow the pattern set by their very first burn. If you extinguish the candle before the wax pool reaches the edges on that first light, every subsequent burn will follow the same incomplete pattern.

For Divine Wick candles, expect your first burn to take two to three hours to achieve a full melt pool, depending on the diameter of the vessel. It's worth every minute.

What to do if tunnelling has already started

If you've noticed tunnelling beginning, don't despair. Try the foil method: loosely tent a piece of aluminium foil over the top of the candle (not a complete seal — leave a small opening for airflow) and light it. The reflected heat will gently melt the walls of wax inward and help create a more even pool. Check every 30 minutes and never leave it unattended.

Quick Reference — Candle Safety in the UK
  • Always place candles on a stable, heat-resistant surface — never directly on wood or fabric.
  • Keep candles at least 10cm apart from each other and away from curtains, books, and decorative items.
  • Never leave a burning candle unattended or within reach of children or pets.
  • Stop burning when 1cm of wax remains — burning below this can cause the vessel to overheat.
  • Never use water to extinguish a candle — it can cause hot wax to splatter and crack glass vessels.
  • Ensure the room is well-ventilated, especially when burning candles with essential oils.

Natural Wax and Why It Matters

All Divine Wick candles are made with 100% natural wax — because what your candle is made from directly affects how it burns, how it smells, and how healthy your home environment is.

Paraffin wax — the most widely used wax in mass-market candles — is derived from petroleum and can release trace amounts of harmful chemicals when burned. Natural waxes like soy, coconut, and rapeseed burn cleaner, produce less soot, and are better for your home's air quality. In the UK, where we spend more time indoors than almost anywhere in Europe, this matters.

Natural waxes also hold fragrance oils differently — they release scent more slowly and steadily, creating a fuller, more nuanced fragrance experience rather than an overwhelming initial blast that quickly fades. This is the secret behind the signature scent throw you'll notice with your Divine Wick candle — even before you light it.

Storing Your Candles — UK Edition

British weather is notoriously unpredictable, and temperature fluctuations can affect your candles more than you might think. Proper storage keeps your candles performing at their best between burns.

🌿Spring

Ideal conditions — store in a cool room away from direct sunlight through new windows.

☀️Summer

Avoid windowsills — natural wax softens in heat. Store in a cool drawer or cupboard.

🍂Autumn

Perfect burning weather. Keep away from radiators and central heating vents.

❄️Winter

Cold rooms can cause surface cracking. Allow candles to reach room temperature before burning.

As a general rule, store your candles in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and strong temperature swings. Keep lids on when not in use — this preserves the fragrance and protects the wax surface from dust. Most Divine Wick candles will retain their fragrance beautifully for up to 12 months when stored correctly.

Maximising Fragrance Throw

Fragrance throw refers to how well a candle distributes its scent through a room. There are two types: "cold throw" (the scent when unlit) and "hot throw" (the scent when burning). Here's how to maximise both:

For the best hot throw, burn your candle in a room that's appropriately sized for the candle's diameter. A small tealight in a large open-plan kitchen will barely register; a 30cl jar in a cosy bedroom will fill the space beautifully. As a guide, Divine Wick candles in our standard jar size are ideal for rooms up to approximately 20 square metres.

Close the door while burning to allow the fragrance to build in the room, then open it to let the scent drift through your home. This is especially effective with our Coastal & Meadow Calm and Café & Bakery Fragrance collections, where the scent profiles are designed to evoke an entire atmosphere rather than a single note.

Repurposing Your Divine Wick Vessel

One of the joys of a beautifully designed candle is what comes after the last burn. Our vessels are crafted to have a life beyond the wax — as plant pots, desk tidies, pen holders, or simply elegant decorative objects on a shelf.

To clean your vessel, place it in the freezer for one to two hours. The remaining wax will contract and can be popped out cleanly. Remove any residue with a cotton pad and a little coconut oil or rubbing alcohol, then wash with warm soapy water. Your vessel is now ready for its second life.
